Biography

Leon Jick joined the Brandeis University faculty in 1966 as Director of the Center for Jewish Studies, and later became the Helen and Irving Schneider Professor of American Jewish Studies. Throughout Jick's twenty-four year career at Brandeis, he held many positions, including Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Chair of the Near Eastern and Judaic Studies Department. He retired from Brandeis in 1990 and the following year served as a visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Prior to coming to Brandeis, Leon Jick was a pulpit rabbi for twelve years in Boston and Mount Vernon, New York, where he was very active in the civil rights movement. Over the years, Jick became involved in many organizations within the Jewish community, including: Institute for Jewish Life (IJL), where he served as Director; Association for Jewish Studies (AJS), where he also served as Director; and the Movement for Soviet Jewry.

A sought-after lecturer and educator, Dr. Jick continued to be active in the American Jewish community as a public speaker. His books include, In Search of a Way (1966), Teaching of Judaica in American Universities (1970), and The Americanization of the Synagogue (1976, 1992). Jick also authored many published articles. He passed away in 2005.
